Toyota Motor Corp will offer a solar-powered charging system as an option for the new «Prius PHV» plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), which will be released in Europe, Japan and the US in the fall of 2016.
The company exhibited a model with specifications for the Japanese market at Smart Community Japan 2016, a trade show that took place from June 15 to 17, 2016, at Tokyo Big Sight.
The system consists of (1) an on-roof solar panel, (2) nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) battery to store electricity generated by the panel and (3) ECU (electronic control unit) containing a DC-DC converter. The maximum output of the solar panel is 180W.
The system works in two operation modes, depending on whether the vehicle is running or not. When the vehicle is not running, electricity generated by the panel is temporarily stored in the NiMH battery and, then, transmitted to the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery used to drive the vehicle to charge the Li-ion battery.
When the vehicle is running, electricity generated by the panel is not transmitted to the Li-ion battery but supplied to a 12V system that powers auxiliary devices so that the consumption of power stored in the Li-ion battery is reduced.
The ECU incorporating the DC-DC converter is used to control the power supply to the Li-ion battery and the 12V system. Toyota has not yet disclosed the type of the solar cell employed for the new system.
Toyota has not yet disclosed the capacity of the NiMH battery either. However, when the solar panel generates electricity for a day on a sunny day, the amount of electricity that enables the vehicle to travel up to 5km (2.7km on average) can be stored, the company said.
The solar-powered charging system will be offered as an option only for the Japanese and European models of the new Prius PHV.
«We will not offer it for the US model because there is no demand for it,» the company said.
